The Spanish authorities have approved 7.2 GW of new PV projects so far this year, with 3.1 GW authorized in the second quarter alone.

A total of 46 renewable energy projects, with an aggregate power of 3,526.5 MW, have obtained administrative authorizations throughout the second quarter of the year, according to a report from the Foro Sella Renewable Energy Observatory, prepared by Opina 360 with data from the Spanish Official Journal.

By type of source, solar photovoltaic took center stage this quarter, with 3,155.8 MW authorized, compared to only 390.7 MW of wind. Of these, 3,249.9 MW already have construction authorization.

Castilla y León, with 1,336.3 MW authorized, is the region with the most authorized MW, followed by Andalusia (864.8) and Castilla-La Mancha (391.3). In nine regions, there were no project authorizations.

So far this year, the authorized renewable power has reached 9,482 MW, of which 7,109 are solar photovoltaic and 2,373 MW are wind. Castilla y León (2,647), Aragón (2,482), Andalusia (1,091) and Madrid (927) concentrate three-quarters of the power of the projects that have obtained authorizations from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition in the first six months of the year.

Regarding environmental impact statements (DIA), only one positive statement has been published throughout the second quarter, relating to a 19.3 MW photovoltaic project in the Valencian Community. On the other hand, seven projects have received a negative EIA in this same period, with a total of 717 MW of power. By type of source, negative DIAs have affected wind generation (398.6 MW) more than photovoltaic generation (318.5 MW).

On the other hand, 42 renewable energy projects have entered the public information phase during the second quarter of 2024, with a total generation capacity of 4,864.5 MW. Three-quarters of this power corresponds to photovoltaic plants (3,649.7 MW), 22% to wind projects (1,070.8 MW) and 3% to hydroelectric energy (144 MW).

Of all these projects, 23 are in their initial phase, prior to the environmental impact assessment. They total 2,986.5 MW of power, mainly in photovoltaic plants (2,497.2 MW). The other projects have passed the environmental procedure and are pending obtaining prior and construction authorizations and, in some cases, recognition of public utility.
